چکیده

Background Viral load (VL) testing is highly important for detection of antiretroviral treatment (ART) failure in AIDS patients. However, due to the cost and availability of viral load testing instruments, VL testing is not being performed in many developing and underdeveloped countries. Such countries depend on CD4 tests for staging the HIV infection and for initiating ART, since CD4 testing is simple and less expensive. The objective of this work is to estimate the HIV-1 viral load from CD4 cell count using an hybrid artificial intelligence technique known as the coupled bacterial foraging/jumping frogs optimization algorithm and the three dimensional mathematical model of HIV infection.

Assessment of HTLV-I proviral load, HIV viral load and CD4 T cell count in infected subjects; with an emphasis on viral replication in co-infection

Objective(s): HTLV-I and HIV virus quantification is an important marker for assessment of virus activities. Since there is a direct relationship between the number of virus and disease progression, HTLV- I and HIV co-infection might have an influence on the development of viral associated diseases, thus, viral replication of these viruses and co-infection were evaluated.   Materials and...

No Role of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2) Infection on HIV Progression in Naïve HIV Patients

Background: Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a common infection in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients and may accelerate HIV progression by rising HIV viral load and decreasing CD4 count. However, the available data regarding the influence of HSV-2 seropositivity on HIV progression in HIV individuals are inconclusive. Therefore, we aimed to determine HSV-2 seroprevalence in na&iu...

Coupled jumping frogs/particle swarm optimization for estimating the parameters of three dimensional HIV model

Background The three dimensional model of HIV/AIDS is the basis of active research since it includes most aspects regarding the interaction of HIV with patient’s immune system. This model is parameterized by six parameters namely the death rate of CD4 cells, rate of infection of CD4 cells by virus, death rate of CD8 cells, rate of increase of CD8 cells in response to increased viral load, rate ...

Evaluation of relationship between the level of inflammatory cytokines Interleukin-10 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha with virologic response to treatment in patients with HIV

Background: Despite the considerable advances in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) treatment and management, finding the cure for this disease has been hindered by emerging challenges such as virus resistance and treatment failures. The purpose of this study is to compare the cytokine profiles of patients with successful treatment and patients with unsuccessful treatment to gain a bette...

Low-cost assays for monitoring HIV infected individuals in resource-limited settings

Use of a combination of CD4 counts and HIV viral load testing in the management of antiretroviral therapy (ART) provides higher prognostic estimation of the risk of disease progression than does the use of either test alone. The standard methods to monitor HIV infection are flow cytometry based for CD4+ T cell count and molecular assays to quantify plasma viral load of HIV. Commercial assays ha...
